BOOK CLUB

I've always wanted to be part of a book club.  A small group, maybe 10 or so ... we could then meet at each other's homes.  It would be good to be invited by one friend and then I could meet others to see if we have any friendship genes in common.

My first venture was through the local library.  It was way too large with the room too small.  Most people had indeed read the book so it was interesting ... just not enough to get me to come back.

The next foray was with the Mom of one of Kate's friends.  She had belonged to this group for years so I was pretty excited.  They met at one another's home and included brunch.  Double exciting.  The book that was chosen I would never have read on my own which was a good exercise for my brain.  Except only one other person out of 15 had read the book.  They just liked to get together and show off their $1M kitchens and gourmet cooking.  And drink a LOT of wine.  Honestly it was like Stepford Wives.  All surgically enhanced chemical blonds with expensive casual clothes with matching shoes and jewelry.  I came in my jeans.  And I don't drink that early.  And I had read the book!

Oprah was my next book club and it worked out the best, so far.  Her book picks mostly are tragic without happy endings so it just added to my situational depression.

Yesterday, on Facebook, I got the PERFECT idea to start my OWN book club ... we will meet in the evening, with wine and accompaniments ... and we will read wine labels.  I have a few friends and cousins and siblings who may want to join me ...

  1. That's funny. Why not a wine club?

I belonged to a book club and most of the people did read the books but few had much to say about them other than "I liked it" or "I didn't like it". It wasn't as much fun as I had imagined it would be. We didn't get to know each other well either, so I was disappointed. I will try another one after I move.

    1. I was surely disappointed. Now I just ask friends and almost always find an interesting read!

  2. I can live vicariously through your book club trial and error. Thanks for the experience! The only book club I enjoyed, and was a member of for nearly a decade was a Bible book club. We took turns leading the discussions, which were quite serious, focused on transforming our difficulties and nourishing our spirits. Come to think of it, it was like group therapy LOL. And there's the 'book club' of AA. LOL. Anyway, for each chapter of life there MUST be a book club to match. Looks like you're on to something!

Genuinely reflecting on any good book can provide insights that open our hearts and minds. Or reflecting on any heartfelt post : -)

    1. Hubby and I belonged to a weekly bible club ... which was interesting (we are NON church goers) and it lasted for over two years.

  3. If I were in a book club, I would want to discuss THE BOOK! Maybe what the philosophy of the book is. The hidden meaning? If any. Like a book STUDY group--with NO million dollar women! Oh well--I enjoy reading books about "life after the world ends"--stuff like that and am probably the only one around here who reads that kind of stuff. Bring on Animal Farm and 1984 and On The Beach.

    1. I never did get those "hidden meaning" books! Unless the author TELLS you ... how do know that's what s/he meant? Really??

  4. I've had two VERY successful and long term "clubs". A gourmet cooking group (four couples) and a women's investment club (10 ladies). Each lasted about ten years. All of them enjoyable!!!

  5. LOL I belonged to a book club. All of the women went to the same church and knew each other. My friend asked me to go with her. I didn't know a single person except her. That was fine, but I didn't enjoy their book selections... for the most part. They were often grim and depressing. I would like to try again with a new group. I'm sure each group has its own flavor.

  6. Oh, I forgot to say that my friend brought a bottle of wine to the first meeting. She and I were the only ones who even tasted it.
