A1C

I started off my new calendar year with a trip to the Dr.  Mainly for the lady exam and gosh was THAT good news!  Don't need to have one for five years (unless I become sexually active .... ah ha ha ha!).  But I did have a yeast infection ... I think the heat plays a big role in that.  I wear cotton everything so stay tuned on that.

The big SCARE was my sugar level, A1C.  Wow was that a wake up call or what!

I immediately called and signed up for Weight Watchers (again).  Then looked at a list of common foods and their carb levels ... oh my goodness, my whole diet is carbs!  With an occasional fruit or vegetable.  Instead of the other way around.  Well, if Oprah can do it (and she spends a bit of time on my island) then I can do it.  The only meeting in my town is at 7:30 am ... tomorrow.  We know THAT is not going to happen.  So I'll try the 5:30 pm Monday evening meeting in Kahului.  Ten miles.  Near Whole Foods and Costco so I can make an afternoon of it.

Wouldn't you know it's a whole new plan since this summer.  SmartPoints instead of PointsPlus.  Penalties for carbs and extra calories for EXERCISE.  It's the whole body approach.

And I just saw this quote ... If it came from a plant, eat it;  if it was made in a plant, don’t.”

One step forward.

  1. Maybe you'll run into Oprah at WW. Wouldn't that be neat. You can bring your numbers down with diet, I have no doubt about that.

I love that saying at the end of your blog.

  2. Oh that damn A1C!! Fred was happy if he could keep his at 7. WW has really worked for a whole bunch of people I know. My whole diet secret was, I was at 195# and then Fred died. I didn't eat for days and then when I tried, a few bites was all I could stand--30# gone in three months. Now, I eat very little. One Salmon patty was all I could eat last night for supper. So the 30# have stayed off. I am a happy eater--weighing more when my life is content. Losing weight when my life gets in turmoil--most people are the other way around. You posted your weigh the other day and YES--it is too much for you. You don't want to become Diabetic. Trust me on this--it is AWFUL!!! You just cannot lose a sufficient amount of weight with exercise--you need to exercise to keep the strength in your arms and legs. A nice balance of protein and carbs--because you need some carbs too. Get going and WAY TO GO for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I have been checking in periodically to read your blog for about two years but I've never introduced myself. I enjoy it so much. My husband and I try to travel to Maui at least twice a year (for two to three weeks each time) and have for about fifteen years. We love the entire island, but feel most at home in the South Maui area where you live. I found this blog when I did a search two years ago regarding Auntie Kali's cottage after hearing about it from the nicest woman who was working in a food truck in Kihei. When I searched the first thing that came up was your blog with a reference to the cottage and your friendship with the woman who lives on the property. Anyway - it was booked solid so we ended up staying somewhere else on that trip - but I found you and your blog and occasionally I pop in to see what you are up to. It connects me to "my" Maui and I just like what you write - the details of your life, etc. :-) I admire you very much! Also, it is my lifelong dream to move to Maui as you did with your husband after retirement. Just wanted to say hi and good luck with Weight Watchers. I need to lose 40 pounds and have been watching those new Oprah WW commercials. Maybe I will give it a try too.

    1. Nice to e-meet you, Elaine! What a small, small world. You found THE best food truck on the island ... and is you ever have a chance to go view (or even stay) at Carrie's B+B, do it! Email me on your next visit and maybe we can meet for coffee ... or wine!!!

Weight Watchers works IF you simply follow it! I did get down to my ideal weight ... and last night I looked at those photos. I have 50 to lose ... maybe together? We can be email buddies!

Thanks for taking time to comment!!!

  4. Oh, God, I need W/W or something. I'm still not on track and way too many carbs in my diet. Weight affects diabetes so much, which I don't have (thank goodness), but that blood sugar creeps up when I gain. Scary stuff. Good luck to you. You will do it! And keep an eye out. I want to hear about an Oprah sighting.
