APRIL ALREADY?

April is Volunteer Appreciation month.

Saturday Na Hoaloha honored us with a luncheon and we were allowed to bring a client guest.  I chose Phyllis.  Another volunteer (who has now become a friend) brought her special client, Fern, who lives in the same subsidized housing with Phyllis  We car pooled.

We each got a lei, a name tag and a door prize ticket.  Na Hoaloha recently received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award thus we had speeches and congratulations and awards.  Apparently Lisa and I are underachievers as we didn't even receive a bronze award for number of hours donated.  Mainly because we didn't turn in our time sheets.  I worked a LOT of hours at the office last year but didn't think to record them a volunteer hours.  Now I dutifully log every trip.  I'm aiming for the gold next year!

The lunch was a nice little buffet and we enjoyed a stand up comic which I loved.  Lots of drawings for door prizes throughout the afternoon to keep people from leaving.  Phyllis won a $25 gift certificate for a local restaurant ... that she has never been to!  So we will go for lunch a couple times so she can use it.

(Lisa monkeying around during spray painting)

(Yep ... she kinda made a mess of herself ... and my garage)

The theme was You Are an Essential Piece to the Puzzle ... Lisa and I made heart shaped puzzle piece covered centerpiece inserts.  She designed a Word Search puzzle and I did a crossword puzzle that were in the program.

It was a fun time for all!

  1. Years ago, we used to go to a local comedy club. Such fun.

I'm always spray painting something. The overspray can really make a mess.

If you log your hours, I bet you will win the gold next year. :)

    1. Well, probably NOT the gold ... that was for 500+ hours. Ten hours a week? I think not. I think bronze was 100 hours which is normally what I do. Two or three hours a week. Although March was LOTS of hours! I need to learn to crochet!

    1. Gary planted a bird of paradise in my front yard, in a container. It has it's first bloom! Very exciting!

  3. How long did it take between planting and blooms?

    1. About six months. One fully open, three on their way! Last spring Julie and I took a tour at the Lavender Gardens ... and the guide showed us how to pick the bloom, rather than cutting it off. Grab the stem as close to plans as you can and gently tug it out. That way the plant doesn't need as much dead stuff trimmed!

    2. Maui flowers and landscapes must be wonderful to see and smell.

    3. Being a corn-fed girl from Ohio, I'm still amazed by the tropics! I had a night blooming jasmine removed ... it grew so fast and got so big that the scent was overpowering! Gardenia is now my favorite ....

  4. You are both so pretty, and could be sisters! You were spray painting the hearts that went with the bouquets? Nice. They'd look lovely lining a garden path, too.

    1. Lisa and I cut hearts out of cardboard. Hot glued puzzle pieces (from Salvation Army ... what a deal!) on both sides. Then spray painted. They did turn out amazing! The little bow of raffia that Lisa suggested finished them off!
