THE YEAR OF THE FLU

Last night I took my daughter, Kate, to Urgent Care.

After checking all of her vitals, the Dr. took a swab and proclaimed she had the flu ... as well as pneumonia ... and potentially a cracked rib from coughing.  She prescribed tamiflu, antibiotic, inhaler, cough suppressant and ibuprofin for fever reducer.

Her blood pressure was dangerously LOW as she was not drinking enough.  Just sleeping.  Today we go to have an xray to see about her ribs although nothing much can be done about that. It will also provide a better look at her lungs for the pneumonia.

Unfortunately, I'm glad she was diagnosed with the flu ... it will be easier to get them all in for a flu shot next year.  Now that she feels this bad, she is upset that her kids had to feel this way.  She feels like she is going to die.

Many symptoms to the flu (and not everyone has every one!):

Fever above 100 F (38 C), though not everyone with the flu has a fever
Coughing
Sneezing
Watery eyes
Sore throat
A runny or stuffy nose
Headache
Muscle aches
Chills
Fatigue
Stomach pain

Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea (most common in children)

From what I've read, that's exactly what the flu feels like.  Like you would rather die than feel like that.

  1. Wow, you sure have been getting a workout being a family caregiver! Your poor daughter!

I woke up last night at 5:00 thinking I am getting the flu---thanks for the list of symptoms. I took an allergy pill for the congestion but I still feel yucky. I did get a flu shot so if I get the flu I'm hoping it will be mild. Take care of yourself!!!

    1. This is the WORST year for the flu here in Oregon! Three out of five of us are proof of that. I'm like you ... hoping that if I do get the flu, it will be mild. Goodness!

  2. I'm hoping that you also got or will get the Prevnar 13 pneumonia shot. It is better than the one we got a few years ago and...it stings like heck!!!

  3. Oh, my goodness. I'm so sorry. The flu is a horrible thing. And pneumonia!! I used to be one of those who did not get the flu shot. I never got the flu when I was younger. Finally, I got it one year and wanted to die, but I figured I wouldn't get it the following year. Wrong! I got it again. From that time onward, I've gotten the shot. I also get the Prevnar 13 pneumonia shot. I hope your daughter is feeling better. Bella

    1. Today, FINALLY, the drugs have kicked in and she is eating and sitting up ... and walking. She is off work until next Thursday but I hope she listens to her body if she is not ready. I MISS YOU BELLA!
