READING AGAIN

These last three years have been so different.  I used to need to read before I could fall asleep.  I haven't read much of anything since Mr. Ralph died.

Today I opened my Kindle (on my iPhone) and saw that I haven't bought a book since he passed.  I used to read one every month or two.  So I bought a book!  It's like a whole new life again.

Interestingly, several of my widow buddies report the same thing.  What is that all about?  Also, I haven't watched a movie all at one time.  Mostly I do TV series on Netflix or Amazon.  My attention span is just kaput.  Maybe Year Four will open up these doors again.  Have any of you widows/widowers experienced this?

Today I spent an hour or so helping (trying anyway) her to connect to Netflix and Amazon.  Then we tried to use her new accounts on her smart TV ... but between the two of us we screwed up her TV so she had to invest time on the phone to get it back working.  Sorry, buddy!  (I know she still loves me ... I'm babysitting her pride and joy puppy!)

Another boost to my reading .. she gets the local newspaper!

  1. Okay, what book did you buy? And I'm glad you think your concentration is back to try reading again. I know so many widows in person and online who report this, it is a 'real' thing.

    1. It's a crazy phenomenon, isn't it??

I got a mystery by Portland, Oregon attorney turned author Philip Margolin. Violent Crimes.

  2. I haven't been able to read a book all the way through since Fred died--almost 5 years now. I used to read a couple of books a month. It took me a year to be able to concentrate enough to x-stitch and crochet/knit again. Weird isn't it? I thought it was just me.

    1. This lack of concentration/interest happens to my friends who have had surgery too. Veddy interesting ...

  3. "A whole new life" is exactly right. Reading is the greatest escape.

I watch Netflix and HULU and Amazon, too. HULU seems to have a lot of the old series. I love them. Sometimes I find a great new series, or and old one that I missed when it first ran (Lost), or an old one that I originally watched (Brothers and Sisters) but enjoy watching again.

So glad you found reading again. It must be like finding an old friend.

  4. Thanks for this...I thought I was alone in not being able to concentrate on a book. I also have not been able or want to create, which was a great part of my existence before my husband died. I have hope that both will return.

  5. Thanks for reading ... and commenting!

Right now, I still have to "make" myself get started reading. I hope it comes all the way back ... where I crave reading!

  6. Exactly! I have not read a book in the three years since my husband passed. I do not watch movies for your very same reason, concentration. I have not done much sewing or crafting either. I do make it to school and teach every day, otherwise, I just find myself wandering. I like your spirit very much. December 6th was the three year mark. I am hoping to find more of myself this year. I hope you do too.
    Love to you,
    Deborah
