CELEBRATING IN SOLITUDE

Wednesday would have been our 32nd wedding anniversary.

I remember every detail of our big "to do" as if it were yesterday.  Rushing out of the office right at 4pm, driving home to meet up with my soon-to-be husband, his son and my sister.  A two hour drive to the Oregon Coast.  A Justice of the Courts pronouncing us legal at sunset overlooking the beach.  Jeans and sweaters.  Celebrating with clam chowder and champagne.  And so it began.

Mostly ups... a few downs.  Constant communication no matter what.  And a good dose of compromise.

This year I didn't distract myself.  I enjoyed my memories and wallowed in my sadness.  Alone.

At a friend's wedding, June 2006

I sure do miss him ....

  1. You two sure looked happy. I'm glad you were able to enjoy your memories this year. That's a bittersweet sign of acceptance and moving forward, something we all must do in our own time and place.

  2. What a handsome guy. Both of you look so happy in that photo. Clam chowder and champagne sound like the perfect way to kick off a life together. I know you have lots of wonderful memories, and you celebrated in a way that honored that.

    1. We started out with almost nothing. And look at me now! Hard work, perseverance and a bit of good luck!

Time sure does help the healing of grief.

  3. Now when I get those kinds of memories, I find myself smiling, instead of feeling blue. it all takes time and comes to each of us in our own time. Gosh--you too were cuties!!!

  4. Too short a time with that sweetheart! It's lovely to honor both him, and the skills that kept your marriage so buoyant. Wasn't just pretty looks, though you have these, too!
