FACEBOOK FRIENDS

November always reminds me to be thankful.

Since the election, I've decided I don't need to be friends with everyone on Facebook.  So many sore losers (sorry, NOT sorry that I am not politically correct) and 90% of those are being mean and nasty and posting their rude comments on my friends' pages, as well as mine.  My belief is you can post your opinions and beliefs on your own page, but don't post them on mine ... or on my other friend's pages who have never even met you!

Honest, I don't think I would have acted all whiny and negative if Hillary had won.  Calling the election rigged.  Dissing every cabinet choice.  I looked back on my FB account and don't see any nastiness on my part when Obama won.  And not very much during his last four years.

I decided to UNfollow some people until I realized they could still see when I posted on other people's pages.  So I had to turn them off and block them.  It is what it is.  I'm sure they are not sad to miss out on photos of my grandsons!!  Or see what I had for lunch.

I enjoy differences of opinions and conversations back and forth and having my sister call me out on some posts asking me to check the validity of websites.  But no need to call names and and be condescending and vicious during these conversations.

These well educated people would NOT talk to me face to face in this manner (I don't think).  Hiding behind a computer screen sure brings out the worst in people.

While I sure got a lot more accomplished on those few days I deactivated my account (which apparently still worked) I couldn't stay away.

Thanks for listening!

  1. I am so glad the election is over, although I'm hoping we don' look back at that time as the 'good old days.' I'm glad that I kept my political discourse on a website where its purpose is to debate the topics in the news and occasional on my own blog and I kept my opinions to myself on Facebook. I did not block anyone or unfollow them but I sure changed my opinion on a few people I thought I knew better than apparently I did. You're right, behind a computer screen some people get obnoxious.

    1. I don't mind a comment on politics ... often makes me think. But no one will change my mind about anything by being RUDE

I'm going to sign up for a "liberal" online publication and one "conservative" online publication. Suggestions? No more reading the FB news ...

  2. I'm in total agreement. I am hurt and truthfully surprised at the meanness of others.

  3. And thanks for posting, AW! It's liberating and good to take off the 'be nice' social filter so we get real with people. A few of us will slip on the 'blame' banana peel when we do. Not a pretty sight, my friend.

    1. And OK to slip up ... we are all human. With all the fake "sources" and inflammatory headlines ... I've got to pay to get less biased news. I'm thinking Wall Street Journal for my Republican side of the brain ....

  4. "Friends" on Facebook have redefined that word for me as well. My friends, those who know me, who are my friends--which entails first and foremost mutual respect--would never do such things. Why? Respect. Social media has allowed mere acquaintances far more access to our personal lives, and thus our real friends, not to mention family, than was possible in the past. In the past we would personally vet those who we allowed access to our lives. Now we allow them to see as much as we dare post. I am so sorry that ignorants, with a strong sense of spoiled entitlement have violated you in such a way. You deserve far better than that. I have always admired your open-mindedness.

    1. I'm not sure I agree that I am open minded. And perhaps I need to go back on FB and delete anyone I am not close to! As I respect their thoughts and opinions, even if I disagree.

  5. What irritates me on FB is people commenting on my status, getting in fights with other people that have commented. It is MY status, fight with me. Don't argue in the comments section with others of MY friends. I have gone back and deleted many of my posts because two people got into a back and forth argument down in the comments section. Anyway--"we" don't get upset when elections don't go our way--we shrug and realize that life goes on. We also don't answer pollsters questions and most of us don't have signs in our front yards proclaiming who we are voting for. It's nobody's business. I just wish "they" would practice the tolerance "they" are so preachy about. If someone comes crying and whining to me I just say, "Hey, if I can survive 8 years of Obama, you can survive 4 years of Trump." GROW UP!!! You win some, you lose some. And some days you get rained out.

    1. That's the same problem I had! Don't argue with my friends that you do not even know. Keep your opinion on YOUR page and only put kind remarks on mine....or a link to a site that favors your opinion.

I am outraged at how intelligent adults are talking smack to elected officials (the cast of Hamilton, for one). "THEY" need to be respectful and accept the election. Put your nasty words to use supporting your party for the next election.

      Yes, I agree. GROW UP!

  6. Now that the election is over, I'm hoping things will settle down, and people will stop with the nasty tone on both sides. Social media unleashes something in some people.

    1. I think hiding behind a screen encourages the worst in people. I don't think people would TALK to each other in the same manner as what I witness on FB.
